Brennan Johnson’s double helped Nottingham Forest twice come from behind to earn a vital point in a 2-2 draw against Everton in a crunch clash at the bottom of the Premier League.

First-half goals from Demarai Gray and Abdoulaye Doucoure had put the Toffees on course for a third win in six games under Sean Dyche at the City Ground.

But Johnson, who cancelled out Gray’s early penalty, ensured his side earned a share of the spoils with his second 13 minutes from time and kept Everton, and the other sides below them in the relegation battle, at arm’s length.

Each side may feel aggrieved not to have picked up all three points, with a draw doing both teams little favours in regards to their fight against the drop. Everton remain in the bottom three, though they do move level on points with Leeds United in 17th, while Forest remain 14th. With just a four-point gap separating them from the bottom three, they will need to end their winless run soon if they want to avoid dropping straight back into the Championship. Dyche's men need points and quickly if they are to stave off relegation, though their next five matches are all against teams currently in the top half of the division.

The final whistle goes, and the teams are forced to share the spoils as the game finishes 2-2. The visitors were ahead within 10 minutes when Gray scored from the spot after Shelvey brought down McNeil, though their lead lasted just nine minutes as Johnson fired home the rebound from Gibbs-White's saved shot. The Toffees restored their lead before the break though, as a free-kick ended with Doucoure nodding into the back of the net. They were denied all three points though, as Doucoure sloppily lost possession before Johnson added his second of the game with a smart finish into the top left corner. The Forest man nearly clinched his hat-trick as well as all three points late on, but his effort went just past the post and the game finished two apiece.
