Andre Agassi, the former Wimbledon champion, has announced he will play for the United States in the Davis Cup first-round match against Brazil in Sao Paulo in February. It would be Agassi's first Davis Cup action since injuring his shoulder in a 1995 semi-final match against Sweden. The US team has not officially been named by the captain Tom Gullikson, and Agassi said he was not sure whether he had jumped the gun in announcing that he would play. The World No 1 Pete Sampras has already announced he will not play in the first round of the Davis Cup.
Jerry Diamond, former executive director of the Women's Tennis Association, died on Monday aged 68. He had been ill with cancer of the colon. Diamond directed the tour from 1974 to 1985 and is credited with making tennis the most lucrative professional sport for women.
