LOME (Reuter) - Troops loyal to President Gnassingbe Eyadema released members of Togo's interim parliament yesterday after holding them hostage and forcing them to unfreeze funds collected for his party. The troops had ringed the building where the assembly was meeting and closed the country's borders.
The opposition, which dominates the assembly, has reacted by calling a general strike to protest against the interference of the armed forces in the political life of the country.
