Police have confirmed that a 36-year-old man had been detained at Gatwick Airport under the Prevention of Terrorism Act while on route to America.
The man was arrested at the West Sussex airport on Friday while travelling from the Middle East to the US.
It is understood the man was still being questioned by Sussex Police as investigations continued worldwide into the terror attacks on America.
In its report, the News of the World claimed the man, who has not been named, was attempting to follow the same route to America as 11 of the 19 suicide hijackers.
A Sussex Police spokesman said: "A 36-year-old man was arrested at Gatwick while in transit to the USA and detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act."
The man's passport was being checked by Special Branch officers as part of the inquiry. Last week it emerged that 11 of the suicide bombers flew to America from Gatwick or Heathrow between January and June.
