Gentle melancholia as tied to its place of origin (Manchester) as Richard Hawley's is to Sheffield.
The humour is, similarly, of the gallows variety: "Do you fancy a drink / In this place called the brink / We could go there" or "You're the guy on the bus / Who's not quite one of us" to give but two examples.
These are songs to be sipped slowly, given suitably string-laden backing and with melodies often a little too reminiscent of classic 1970s-era Glen Campbell. Five albums in, you'll know if you like this lot by now.
